             1) “and came into the possession of Secretary Wu Shan” for “吴中翰彬收得之”. might have been mistaken for杉,I guess.

2) “he decides to try to make an original contribution” for “欲矜创获”. He who got possession of the painting would be proud of himself as it was him that first “discovered” the invaluable treasure.

3) “In Han there was Guan and Yu,” for “汉有关羽”. The right word order should be “In Han there was Guan Yu and”.

4“Remembering that the poet of Luling” for “谓少陵老子”. Is Luling here a slip of the pen?

5) “Working until their eyes are blurry and their mind distraught, these “scholars” bring all of their great erudition and ingenuity to bear and end up creating a perfect obfuscation of knowledge. “”in “識之昧”, I think, does not mean knowledge but one’s view, insight, 眼光or见地.

6) “be Later Han prose” for “西汉文章”. Is not Later Han(后汉) another dynasty different from 西汉?

7If stylistic analysis is not to them “an erudite man’s deceit” (to quote Zhongchang Tong), it is “a learned man’s blind spot”(to quote Huan Tan).

The subject of the sentence was left out, which might have caused difficulty in grasping its theme. It is not the stylistic analysis to those “scholars”, but what the above-mentioned behaviors appear to Qian Zhongshu, the commentator. Qian believed that those, who did not regarded style as reliable a criterion as the internal date, did so because of their blind spots, and those who concealed the truth by deliberately criticizing stylistic analysis as the “observation of auras” actually had their own axe to grind.

倘非……即是……”is similar to English expression ”either…or…”

8) “But it is also the case that animals hearing music do not apprehend its true nature or appreciate it fully” for “而聞樂之鳥獸,亦未得實盡事”. Here “” is used to “mention another point” “continue to the next one”, which does not mean an opposite turning, so the conjunction “and” sounds better than “but”.

未得實盡事” is not meant to describe “鳥獸”, but “聞樂之鳥獸” as a whole, the analogy, that is. This can be proved by the following sentence “均擬不於倫which means the two analogies, one compare stylistic analysis to “the observation of auras” and the other to “animals hearing music”, are both inappropriate in some sense.

罕譬而喻” literally means to make a point clarified with a few words, close to “言約而達”.

As for “而闻乐之鸟兽,亦未得实尽事;或均拟不于伦,复均罕譬而喻也”, one of my friends offered the following version:

While magicians who "observe auras" truly do invoke..., it is less certain whether animals hearing music truly understand or appreciate it. These analogies, however imperfect in form as the case may be, employ so few words that make the sense perfectly clear nonetheless



张飞文仅存《八摩崖》二十二字、《铁刀铭》三字、及《刁斗铭》题目而已。近人但焘《书画鉴》云:“画史言关、张能画。贵人家藏画一幅,张飞画美人,关羽补竹,飞题云:‘大哥在军中郁郁不乐,二哥与余作此,为之解闷。’” 关羽文无只字存者,而周亮工《书影》卷一○云:“关云长《三上张翼德书》云:‘操之诡计百端,非羽智缚,安有今日?将军罪羽,是不知羽也!羽不缘社稷倾危,仁兄无俦,则以三尺剑报将军,使羽异日无愧于黄壤间也。三上翼德将军,死罪死罪!’右此帖米南宫书,吴中翰彬收得之;焦弱侯太史请摹刻正阳门关帝庙,中翰秘不示人,乃令邓刺史文明以意临之,刻诸石。不知米南宫当日何从得此文也。” 一题一书之为近世庸劣人伪托,与汉魏手笔悬绝,稍解文词风格者到眼即辨,无俟考据,亦不屑刺讯。若夫不识文风而欲矜创获,于是弗辞手劳笔瘁,证赝为真。即如于张飞之题图,大可检核画史中关、张能画之记载,复征之王九思《陂先生集》卷三《张方伯画图歌》:“古人作画铁笔强,汉有关羽晋长康”,或陈邦彦《历代题画诗类》卷八○陈道永《题孙雪居画竹、云:“自寿亭侯始”》,以见明人犹睹关迹,甚复傍参杜甫《佳人》“日暮倚修竹”之句,谓少陵老子“无字无来历”,三弟画美人,二哥补竹之图当曾经眼,故隐取其景,洵所谓“诗中有画”者!不读书之黠子作伪,而多读书之痴汉为圆谎焉。目盲心苦,竭学之博、思之巧,以成就识之昧。 朱熹《朱文公文集》卷五四《答孙季和》:“《小序》决非孔门之旧,安国《序》亦决非西汉文章。向来语人,人多不解,惟陈同父闻之不疑,要是渠识得文字体制意度耳”;焦循《里堂家训》卷下:“柳州辨《冠子》,考作《论语》之人,不烦言而解,此学之所以待于文也。”两家皆耻为文人者,而知文之有资于考辨如此。董《广川书跋》卷二《钟繇贺表》斥其书法“画疏”、“筋绝”,“不复结字”,决是伪托,因曰:“永叔尝辨此,谓建安二十四年九月关羽未死,不应先作此表。论辩如此,正谓不识书者校其实尔。若年月不误,便当不复论辩耶?”言尤明且清,“论辩”他艺,亦若是班。盖“年月”固“实”,凿凿可稽,风格亦自不虚,章章可识。“不识文字体制意度”或“不识书”,遂谓风格无征不信,非若“年月”之类有据可考;甚且以挟恐见破之私心,发为矫枉过正之快口,嗤鉴别风格为似方士之“望气”。倘非“学士之奸”(仲长统《昌言》),即是“通人之蔽”(桓谭《新论》)矣!《乐记》云:“是故知声而不知音者,禽兽是也”,郑玄注:“禽兽知此为声尔,不知其宫商之变也”;黑格尔论撰哲学史者弘博而不通义理,亦谓有如禽兽闻乐,聆声了了无遗,而于诸音之和,木然不觉(Die Verfasser solcher Geschichten lassen Sich mit Tieren vergleichen, welche alle T?ne einer Musik mit durchgeh?rt haben , an deren Sinn aber das Eine, die Harmonie dieser T?ne, nicht gekommenist)夫望气之术士,洵弄虚欺人,而闻乐之鸟兽, 亦未得实尽事;或均拟不于伦,复均罕譬而喻也。(钱钟书《管锥编》第1097页)
