细品名篇醉翁亭(三十二)——“苍颜白发”句英语评析

苍颜白发,颓乎其中者,太守醉也。

      这句在中学课本里是“颓然乎其间者”,注释说:“醉醺醺地坐在众人中间”。这么解有几点不妥。一是原文里并没有这个“坐”字,原文里甚至连动词也没有。(“颓然”若是形容词,无动词也可。)二是“颓然”能解作“倒下”,但若引申为“醉醺醺”之义,难免生硬牵强。注释里只好说“颓然,原意是精神不振的样子,这里形容醉态。”三是,即便“颓然”就是“醉醺醺”,以这“半醉貌”来描写“太守醉也”也是方柄圆凿不合榫。王力主编的《古代汉语》里是“颓乎其中者”,注曰“颓,倒”。这么解释就比较合理了。

罗译“其中那个苍颜白发,半醉的/醉醺醺的,就是太守本人。”原本是句子焦点的“醉”字,降级成了可有可无的定语,而且由“醉”变成“半醉”,清醒了很多啊。原文也没有“是其本人”的强调。

杨译“sits utterly relaxed and at his ease”显然改变了“颓(然)”的含义,也误解了欧阳修的意思——在众宾欢的背景里颓然而醉,他哪里是在强调太守完全放松、闲适自得?

刘译“颓”为“drooping”是说“萎靡不振”而不是“醉倒”,而且又增加了修饰语“Little by little”。

翟理斯把这个“颓”字译成“bald”,像是把“颓”字拆开译了,或者觉得写完“苍颜”和“白发”,接下来就是“秃头”了?离谱得像搞笑。他把“太守醉也”的“醉”体现在了下一句“醉太守”里了。然而,一句的焦点,放在句尾,放在段尾,其强调程度,岂是一个定语所能匹敌的?

“颓(然)”有译“站不住”的,有译“坐”的,有译“躺”的,而何谷理译为“lies sprawled in their midst”, 手脚伸展地躺在人群里,似乎过了。真若是烂醉如泥,就不是“已而”能“太守归而宾客从”的了,下山恐怕要“宾客抬”了。“饮少辄醉”说明醉不在酒,以酒浇心中块垒而已,不至于四仰八叉地失了太守之态。
