宴酣之乐,非丝非竹,射者中,弈者胜,觥筹交错,坐起而喧哗者,众宾欢也。

1. (罗经国)The joy of the feast lies not in the musical accompaniment of strings or flutes, but in winning the games, such as throwing arrows into the vessel, or chess playing. Wine cups and gambling chips lay scattered in blithe disarray. The revelers, now sitting, now standing, cavort madly among themselves. These are the prefect's guests,

2.(杨宪益) There they feast and drink merrily with no accompaniment of strings or flutes; when someone wins a game of cottabus or chess, when they mark up their scores in drinking games together, or raise a cheerful din sitting or standing, it can be seen that the guests are enjoying themselves.

3. (刘师舜)Even without wind or stringed instruments, the revelries become intense with arrow-throwing and chess, with drinking and wine games. Now seated, now standing up, the guests utter loud noises, and have a marvelous time.

4. (谢百魁)The jocundity of the feast does not find expression in music. You can see the contestants shooting their arrows into the pots for prizes, the chess players winning their games, cups and goblets scatters in confusion, and people roistering in standing or sitting postures —it is the guests revelling.

5. (潘正英)The pleasure of revelry is music neither of string, no of bamboo. The shooters hitting the marks; the chessplayers scoring victory; winecups and counters mixed together; and people sitting down and rising up with much noise—the guests are happy and merry.

6.Giles And in the revelry of the banquet hour, there is no thought of toil or trouble; every archer hits his mark, and every player wins his partie; goblets flash from hand to hand, and a buzz of conversation is heard as the guests move unconstrainedly about.

7. Robert E. HegelThe joys of the feast are not from strings or winds; they are from winning at pitch-pot, from victory in chess. Passing goblets and mugs back and forth, shouting with abandon, now sitting, now on their feet—such is the happy abandon of the guests.

8. treasury版)There we feast and drink merrily with no accompaniment of strings or flutes; someone marks up his scores in drinking game, while others win a game of chess; meanwhile, goblets flash from hand to hand, and a buzz of conversation is heard as people rise and sit—all this shows that the guests are enjoying themselves.

9. dharmaraja版)The joy of feasting to our heart's content, comes not from the accompaniment of lyres or flutes; casting a dart and hitting the target, winning a game of go, the wine tallies all mixed up, getting up and sitting down, chattering noisily, this is the happiness of a crowd of guests.

10. wiki版)The happiness of the feast and drinking has nothing to do with strings and flutes. The shooters of dice hit their mark, and players of chess are victorious. Wine cups and game tallies cross back and forth, and people sit and stand in an uproar.

“非丝非竹”说宴欢不在丝竹,译作“no thought of toil or trouble”,莫名其妙。

即使觉得句子太长而分成几句描写,也当用 “Such is the reveling of the guests”一类的句子总揽点题。这样也可以照应到上文与下文里的“……者……也”句式的翻译。

另外,宜用描述性语言,避免使用解释性语言而使文章韵味淡如白水。
